Couple times each year, the Internet goes a flutter with wild rumors that The Smiths finally will reunite, and it appears we’re in the midst of another round, thanks to a recent interview with Morrissey himself and a totally unverified report that the band will reunite next year for four concerts in England, possibly headlining Glastonbury.
First up is Moz’s revelation in an interview with Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper about Coachella allegedly offering to banish all meat from the festival grounds in exchange for a Smiths reunion — or, rather, Morrissey and Johnny Marr performing as The Smiths.
Here’s what he said:
At Coachella a few years you complained about the waft of burning flesh from a nearby barbeque. Has that been a problem since at outdoor shows?
Not at all, and interestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100-percent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths. Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would ‘not require’ the Smiths’ bass player or drummer … which I thought certainly said something.
Then comes a report today from U.K. tabloid site Holy Moly that the Smiths have agreed to four U.K. show next year, noting, “despite such rumours turning out to be total balls in the past, this one has enough weight to it that we’re prepared to call it confirmed, and hang the consequences.”
The last time such rumors swirled, back in April, Marr was quick to quash them. So far, he hasn’t addressed the report.
UPDATE: Reps for both Morrissey and Johnny Marr reportedly have denied the reunion.
