Using the Sun to Make Music
I know this is an unusual video to see on Dark Asylum, but once I watched it, I truly thought this is something I should share here as it puts into context that there is music all around us if we are willing enough to tweak our understanding of music in matter and form. What Robert Alexander is doing truly bridges the arts of music theory, science and technology with something which is organic and we can all understand...nature and sound. That in itself is extremely ethereal and industrial, hence me bringing it here to share. Hope some of you find the concept as interesting as I did. Listen to Robert Alexander's music here: http://www.robertalexandermusic.com/ Composer Robert Alexander is helping NASA make new discoveries by turning raw data into music through a process called Data Sonification. -- I am not someone who has a background in science. While it always intrigued me it was not something that ever came innately. Working at Motherboard has helped me redefine the somewhat nebulous notion of science and what application it has in real life. In producing the second season of Spaced Out, it seemed important that we look to feature non scientists thinking about the future of space. Enter Robert Alexander, a classically trained composer who has always been fascinated with the sky. As Robert was thinking about his thesis he determined that he was interested in the practice of sonification. For those of you who are unfamiliar, sonification is defined simply as is the process of displaying data in an audio format (other than traditional speech). Robert was interested in listening to data and garnering what he and the world can learn from it. We go into it deeper in the piece but I thought of it as such a novel idea. One thinks that most problems have a linear solution but that is not the world we live in, there can and always will be another and maybe more creative way of finding the solution. -Erin Lee Carr Listen to Robert Alexander's music here: http://www.robertalexandermusic.com/ SPACED OUT - produced by http://Motherboard.vice.com For more Spaced Out click here: http://bit.ly/MOTHERBOARD-Spaced-Out Follow MOTHERBOARD Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/motherboardtv Twitter: http://twitter.com/motherboard Check out the Best of VICE here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Best-Of Subscribe to VICE here! http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE Check out our full video catalog: http://bit.ly/VICE-Videos Videos, daily editorial and more: http://vice.com Like VICE on Facebook: http://fb.com/vice Follow VICE on Twitter: http://twitter.com/vice Read our tumblr: http://vicemag.tumblr.com
